Do you take yourself too seriously? I know I catch myself in serious mode more often than I’d like to admit – but I’m working on it! Our mental attitude affects how we perceive the moments of our lives and can also influence our health.
Here are 4 good reasons to take yourself less seriously:
- Being overly serious can trigger stress hormones and we all know that stress is directly linked to a whole host of illnesses.
- Being too serious takes the fun out of life!
- Life is too short to be serious all the time.
- Being overly serious often inadvertently self-sabotages our goals and what we want to manifest in our lives.
I know it’s easy to get caught up in the craziness of life – trust me, I know all about it. Don’t we all? Most of us have mortgages and bills, jobs and careers and families to take care of too.
If you’re feeling like you need a much-welcomed reminder to let loose and relax here’s top 5 suggestions to help take yourself less seriously.
1. Let Go & Surrender
Learn to relax into this very moment. Take a deep breath. Know what you can and can’t control. Most people who tend to take themselves very seriously are classic “over achievers” – if this is you, try to remember the mantra “I balance making things happen with allowing things to happen”.
2. Release Your Inner Silly Self
You know how certain people can tend bring out that silly person in you? Those funny people that constantly crack funny jokes and make you laugh until you almost pee your pants – hang out with them more often! (and make sure to wear underwear!) I love hanging around funny people, it makes me let loose and connect with my inner-silly self and even crack more jokes than I might otherwise would. It also reminds me to laugh at myself which helps me take myself less seriously.
3. Connect with Your Inner Playful Child
At one point in our lives, all we did was play – everything revolved around playing. Then we grow up and everything became about working. How balanced do you feel between work and play? Do you do things that you enjoy on a regular basis? Try to do at least one thing every day that you feel brings you a sense of playfulness to help ease the daily stresses of life.
4. Gain Perspective
Most of us work too hard and it’s easy to get caught up in it. But try to step back and look at the bigger picture: Do you think that at the end of your life you’re going to wish that you spent more time working or more time playing and having fun and enjoying the moments of your life?
5. Find The Humor in Life – It’s Everywhere
Everything we experience in life is a result of our perception. If you shift your perceptual framework and start seeing the world around you as funny, ironic and often downright hilarious – then that’s what you’re going to experience. It’s pretty easy to see the humor in life around you, all it takes is a little people watching (but I don’t mean lurking!) to witness the comical and even entertaining nature of human beings.
What can you do right now to start taking yourself less seriously?
I would love to hear from you!
