When I was a kid, growing up in Montreal, Canada, there was this huge Orange Dome that used to sell Orange Julip’s (also known as Orange Julius in the US). Basically it was a mix of milk and orange juice and we used to love going for this special treat with dad. I was in the kitchen yesterday and came up with a raw version that I just love, bringing back all sorts of wonderful childhood memories. It’s a raw vegan alternative to dairy and you can use whatever nut you like to make your nut milk with.
Raw Orange Julius Smoothie
For this raw smoothie recipe, I used macadamia nuts because I love the creaminess that they provide and they grow locally here in Hawaii. I wanted it to be really creamy, so I didn’t add as much water as I usually do when I make nut milks.
- Vita-mix or high powered blender. I recommend the Vitamix because it’s super durable, but any high-powered blender will do!
Mac Nut Milk Recipe:
In the blender, add:
- 1 cup raw macadamia nuts
- 2 cups water.
- Blend on high and then strain with a nut milk bag. (Keep the nut pulp in a freezer bag in the freezer for recipes like raw cinnamon hazelnut scones.)
Raw Orange Julius Recipe
Once you have your mac nut milk. Simple add:
- 2 organic oranges (the juiciest and freshest oranges you can find). You can either throw them in whole or juice them and only add the juice.
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
- 1 date
- Blend together.
And voila! Super easy Raw Orange Julius smoothie.
From this base you can always make any variations that you like. The next day I made it again with a banana and it was also delicious and a little more frothier, which I like. You may want to play with adding a dash of cinnamon or even nutmeg or cardamon.
I also have another recipe to share with you that uses this base, that’s also so incredibly easy. (Hint: Just add chia to make a Raw Orange Julius Chia Seed Pudding!)
Enjoy this yummy dairy-free, raw food recipe!
